THJS Car Club
THJS Car Club
What are we doing?
"Greenpower Education Trust is a UK based charity which gets young people enthusiastic about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car."
THJS is participating in this amazing enterprise project, within FORMULA GOBLIBN; we will design, build and race our own electric car, and will have the opportunity to take it to races on iconic race tracks such as Silverstone and Goodwood.
What's involved?
➢ Designers: generating design ideas for the team's name and logo and the car’s bodywork.
➢ Fundraising & finance: working to find ways to raise money and sponsorship to support the project.
➢ Social media: creating a website, photographing and blogging to record the team’s progress, raising the profile of the project.
➢ Build: building the car from the kit, as well as creating bespoke bodywork from the chosen design.
➢ Drivers & pit-crew: learn to drive and race the car, pit-crew to support the driver on race days.
Who do we need?
Essential Skills
➢ Imaginative and creative thinkers – to design, create, and bring our ideas to life.
➢ Tenacious fundraisers – we will be pitching our project for sponsorships, you will need to be able to write well, and persuasively, and to deliver presentations to local businesses.
➢ Switched on marketers – our social media team will design and create our own website where we will upload photos and blog posts, tracking the whole project from start to finish.
➢ Tech experts – able to get stuck into the engineering and mechanics of building a winning racing car.
➢ Determined drivers – our drivers and support crew must be ready to hit the circuit and race to victory.
Above all, you need to be:
➢ Hard workers – it won’t be easy, but it will be rewarding.
➢ Team players – it’s not all about one person, this is a whole team effort.
➢ Resilient responders – there will be setbacks, but we will find ways to overcome them.
How does it run?
➢ THJS Car Club begins each September, and runs through the whole academic year, until the following July.
➢ We can accommodate up to 20 children in the team, these children will be in Year 6 in that year (but don’t worry – we aim to run the club each year after that, so subsequent year groups will have a chance to participate as well).
➢ Our club will run as an after-school club, for an hour or so each week during term time. You will need to commit for the full year.
➢ Everyone in the club will have the opportunity to participate in each aspect of the project – design, fundraising, blogging, building and driving. So even if you are not one of the final drivers, everyone will have the chance to have a go as we practise on the school grounds.
➢ There will be a small cost involved each term in being part of the club – this is to cover the expenses involved. Please speak to us if you are worried about this; we want everyone to be able to have the opportunity to participate.
Parents - what are the benefits?
➢ STEM Capital – broadening horizons by boosting engagement with and participation in science, technology, engineering and maths.
➢ Sustainability – enhancing understanding of, and contributions to a more eco friendly and sustainable future.
➢ Enterprise skills – an exciting venture supported by adults but led and run by pupils themselves, encompassing many essential business and life skills.
➢ Teamwork – learning to pull together and work side-by-side in a shared endeavour, embedding social skills and cooperative and supportive attitudes.
➢ FUN – this really is a fantastic opportunity, and we hope to provide our children with amazing experiences that they can be proud of, and will never forget, for the rest of their lives.
