INFORMATION ABOUT THE CURRICULUM IN YEAR 4

Autumn Term 2026

MATHS

This term will be working on the following areas (including a range of problem solving and reasoning activities).

Place Value:  We will be extending our place value knowledge to 1000s and 10 000s by comparing and ordering numbers. We will also learn how to round numbers and estimate calculations.

Addition and Subtraction:  We will further consolidate our column addition and subtraction skills by working with 4-digit numbers, and then we will investigate methods of efficient subtraction.

Area: We will learn what area is and work it out for various shapes, both by counting squares and by calculation.

Multiplication and Division:  We will learn the multiplication and division facts of the 7,9,11, and 12 times tables. We will also learn what happens when you multiply a number by itself or by 0.

Children will continue to work on their Terrific Times Tables to help the quick recall of times tables. All children have their login details and can access TTRS from home.

ENGLISH

In the first half term in English, we will be creating a non-chronological report based on London. The purpose of the text is to inform the reader.

In the second half term, we will be reading The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. We will be creating our own narratives to entertain the reader, based in their own created imaginary worlds.

Spelling patterns taught over the week will be incorporated into writing as will sentence structures which are provided as home learning tasks.

READING

During our Whole Class Reading sessions, we will be reading interesting extracts from challenging texts and applying our reading skills and strategies to infer, predict and retrieve information.

At home, children should read for a minimum of 20 minutes at least 5 times a week.

SCIENCE

We will start the term describing the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans, identifying the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions, and then construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey. Following this, we will identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating, recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear, find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it, and recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.

GEOGRAPHY

In the first half of the term, we will be learning about the continent of Europe, and afterwards we will focus on some physical and human features of Italy, including looking at some landmarks in Rome. We will also explore the impact of tourism.

HISTORY

In History, we will learn about the Roman Empire and the invasion of Britain and how the organisation and discipline of their army and civilisation allowed them to conquer many nations and create a vast empire.

ART

In Art we will be focusing on Drawing and drawing self-portraits.

DT

In DT we will be focusing on Food, looking at a healthy and varied diet. We will work towards designing, making and evaluating our own healthy sandwich.

MUSIC

In the first half term, our unit will be based on Gospel Music. We will be focusing on the pentatonic scale, rhythm and call-and-response. In the second half term we will be looking at music in film, using the Pink Panther theme song as the stimulus; then we will look at creating music inspired by colour and art.

COMPUTING

Learners will explore the concept of repetition in programming using the Scratch environment. Learners look at the difference between count-controlled and infinite loops, and use their knowledge to modify existing animations and games using repetition. Their final project is to design and create a game which uses repetition, applying stages of programming design throughout.

PSHE

In PSHE this term, our unit will be Being Me in My World, focusing on being part of a class team, being a school citizen, right responsibilities and democracy, rewards and consequences, group decision making, having a voice and looking at what motivates behaviour. We will also look at differences, focusing on challenging assumptions, judging appearances, accepting our self and others, understanding influences, understanding bullying, problem solving, identifying how special and unique we are and first impressions.

RE

In RE our unit is Creation Stories. In this unit we will be looking at different beliefs that exist about the origin of the universe. We will also be considering our responsibility to the natural world. Our learning  will be focussed on the key question: What responsibilities to we have towards the natural world and why?

FRENCH

In French we will first be recapping our learning from Year 3 (such as salutations, numbers, colours). We will then learn the vocabulary and phrases to communicate about our pets, home and classroom in French.

PE

4NW will have PE on Monday and Thursday.

4JM will have PE on Monday and Friday.

This term our PE units are: Handball, Outdoor Adventure Activities, Hockey and gymnastics (focusing on bridges).

Children should come into school on the PE days wearing their full kit and correct trainers.

All jewellery must be removed prior to the PE lesson. Children are responsible for removing their own earrings, if they cannot do this, surgical tape must be provided, and the children will need to cover their own piercings.

Homework will follow the whole school schedule which includes: My Maths, Spelling Shed, sentences, reading and multiplication practice.

Art of Sentence is set and returned every Monday

Spellings set on Tuesday, tasks to be completed on EdShed
